Master of Arts in Anthropology Spotlight

The Eastern New Mexico University’s nationally acclaimed Master of Arts in Anthropology degree is the ideal stepping stone for students pursuing career advancement opportunities or doctoral degrees. Offered by ENMU for over four decades, it is one the institutions longest running master’s level programs.
Program Curriculum
The program offers a unique focus on archaeology in the Southwestern United States. This allows students to accumulate real world experience at an internationally known archaeological site. Unlike many innovative programs at Eastern, the anthropology degree cannot be earned online. Competitive anthropology graduates need hands-on, practical experiences at real archaeological sites which cannot, at the moment, be properly administered online. In addition to the required curriculum, students must complete a master’s level thesis or research project in an area that corresponds to areas that the faculty has a considerable amount of knowledge. Examples of the faculty backgrounds for the program include taphonomy, hunter-gathers, geo-archaeology, Paleo-Indian studies, historic preservation, cultural resource management, GIS, lithic technology, quantitative methods, and so many other exciting areas. Students who are interested in pursuing this program must have an undergraduate degree in anthropology (or similar major) and a 3.0 GPA at a minimum.
The career opportunities for Master of Arts in Anthropology degree holders are quite numerous. In academia, these graduates can be found as teachers of a variety of subjects related to anthropology including epidemiology, public health and cultural studies. Additionally, anthropologists have budding careers in the corporate world as statistical analysts, forensic analysts and behavioral researchers.
